The group has elected to read two books in sequence:
the first, a short work of journalism/travel writing called The Message by Ta-Nehisi Coates in which he travels to Senegal, South Carolina, and Israel-Palestine. Published in 2024, it should make for a highly relevant and deeply sickening read.
This meeting will take place at The Other Side of Utica (2011 Genesee St) at 6:30pm on Tuesday, July 22th.
Following The Message, the group has also elected to go for a much longer read from one century earlier: Theodore Dreiser’s 1925 novel, An American Tragedy. Based on the notorious murder of Grace Brown in the summer of 1906 at Big Moose Lake in the Adirondacks, the novel should make for a more personal read. The book is around 800 pages, so I am informing you now so you can play the early bird and get at that sweet, sweet worm.
If all goes well, this meeting will take place at The Other Side at 6:30pm on Tuesday, August 12th.
As always, a potluck dinner seems to make for a more comfortable experience, so please feel free to bring something to share.
