SUMMARY:Platform Plebs: Sharing Power
DESCRIPTION:Carl A. Rubino Hamilton at The Other Side series\n\nPlatform Plebs: Sharing Power\, a talk by Ashley Gorham\, Assistant Professor of Government\n\nTraditionally\, online platforms\, especially social media\, have not been seen as political spaces. Yet as contemporary events attest\, many social media platforms are distinctly political\, featuring content and making policies of broad\, public\, and common concern. Given this reality\, we should investigate how such spaces are governed and how they should be governed in the future. Drawing on Machiavellian political thought\, Prof. Gorham offers a model for a more democratic form of platform governance.\n\nFree and Open to the Public\n\nWednesday\, October 15\, 2025\n7:30 p.m.

SUMMARY:Outcast International presents: Life Sucks. (click for all show dates)
DESCRIPTION:OUTCAST returns to THE OTHER SIDE with the Aaron Posner Comedy “Life Sucks” \nAfter a 2-year hiatus\, Outcast International is back to present the comedy “Life Sucks” at The Other Side in Utica\, NY from October 9th through October 12th. \nWritten by Aaron Posner\, author of the hit play “Stupid F#%*ing Bird\,” which is a parody of Chekhov’s “The Seagull\,” “Life Sucks” is the playwright’s hilarious and poignant take on Chekhov’s “Uncle Vanya.” \nDescribed as his love letter to Chekhov\, Posner’s “Life Sucks” pulls the most important parts of “Uncle Vanya” and spins them in uniquely modern ways\, including asking the characters to interact directly with the audience. Although Chekhov’s plays can be heavy in their dealing of the universal themes of love and loss\, Posner offers us hope and urges us to – in the words of one of his characters – “Move on. Move forward. Move further into life!“ \nSuperbly funny\, smart\, audacious and heartbreaking\, the play has been lauded by the critics\, with the Chicago Sun Times writing\, “’Life Sucks’ is altogether wise\, profoundly humane\, hilarious\, quirky\, endearing and\, in countless clever ways\, brilliantly faithful to its source . . . Posner has managed to find his own voice in the process\, bringing a playful\, far from cynical\, fourth-wall-piercing originality to the story.” Jesse Green of The New York Times wrote\, “Aaron Posner’s bitingly funny and unexpectedly touching play . . . [proves] there is no date stamp on feeling stranded between regrets and hopes\, between fancy dreams and the banality of existence.” \nAccording to Outcast producer/director Eileen Tiller-Clanton\, the play actually poses the question to the audience: Does life suck? “Audiences are in for a treat\, says Tiller-Clanton. “Life might suck\, but we’re all in it together\, and everyone will come away from this show feeling at least a little better.” \nAbout the story: “Uncle Vanya” is named after one of literature’s great whiners\, a character who not only doesn’t get what he wants but has to suffer the indignity of watching other people enjoy what they don’t deserve. In Posner’s take on the play\, Vanya (Todd Allen)\, has been slaving away for years on his family’s estate. He lives with his niece Sonia (Lexie Carey)\, who’s desperately in love with Dr. Aster (Matt Grove)\, an idealistic doctor with a drinking problem\, who’s been hanging around more than usual lately because of the bewitching presence of the Professor’s wife\, Ella (Valerie Abel). The Professor (Thom Capozzella)\, who is also Sonia’s father\, is a selfish and pompous prig who hates Vanya as much as Vanya hates him. He and Ella have come to stay for a few days\, upsetting the staid routine of the household\, which also includes Babs (Barbara Pratt)\, a friend of Sonia’s dead mother\, and Pickles (Leslie Reilly)\, a daffy relation with the kindest heart. \n“Life Sucks” will be presented at The Other Side\, 2011 Genesee Street in Utica\, on Thursday\, Friday\, and Saturday\, October 9\, 10 and 11 at 7:30pm\, with two matinee performances on Saturday and Sunday\, October 11 and 12 at 2:30pm. Seating is limited; ticket buyers are encouraged to buy tickets online at the reduced price of $14 at www.eventbrite.com/e/life-sucks-tickets-1623794766859?aff=oddtdcreator. Any remaining seats will be made available at the door for $20. \nOutcast International was founded in Munich\, Germany in 1995 and since 2009 has presented unique plays and musicals in Central New York\, some of which were presented at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in Scotland\, as well as in Stuttgart\, Germany. With their sights set on the 2026 Fringe in Dublin\, Ireland\, the Outcasts’ presentation of “Life Sucks” is part of the those fundraising efforts.

SUMMARY:Community is the Heart of Healing
DESCRIPTION:The prolonged uncertainty these last several years has negatively influenced the mind-body health of many individuals and communities. The Building Connections Collective is raising awareness of collectivism for enriching healing practices and better overall health and wellbeing. This approach not only acknowledges individual experiences but also highlights the importance of community and shared cultural connections in the healing process. \nCollective healing practices have ancient roots\, and the Building Connections Collective is raising awareness that health and healing is a collective responsibility and involves actionable steps for supporting the health of a community. \nIf you are interested in this topic\, consider learning more about the Building Connections Collective on Sept 18th\, 6pm – 7:30pm at 2011 Genesee St\, Utica NY 13501 and help bring awareness about the benefits of collective healing.\n\nQuestions reach out to Deborah Faust at DFaust@mhanys.or 518-414-2899

SUMMARY:More Than You Can Know - Hamilton at The Other Side
DESCRIPTION:While cleaning out the attic of her family home\, Canadian-American writer Naomi\nGuttman discovers bundles of love letters written during her parents’ transatlantic\ncourtship. With those letters\, plus home-movie footage\, photographs\, and surprisingly\ncandid interviews about love\, fidelity\, and gender roles\, Guttman weaves a poignant tale\nof a sixty-four-year marriage between two doctors whose love is tested by time and\ncircumstance. Inspired by the films of Alan Berliner\, Judith Helfand\, and Sarah Polley\,\nGuttman’s first film reveals a rare and intimate glimpse into the arc of a complex\nrelationship \n  \nPart of the Carl. SUMMARY:Big and Glassy Book Club
DESCRIPTION:The group has elected to read two books in sequence:\n\nthe first\, a short work of journalism/travel writing called The Message by Ta-Nehisi Coates in which he travels to Senegal\, South Carolina\, and Israel-Palestine. Published in 2024\, it should make for a highly relevant and deeply sickening read.\nThis meeting will take place at The Other Side of Utica (2011 Genesee St) at 6:30pm on Tuesday\, July 22th.\n\nFollowing The Message\, the group has also elected to go for a much longer read from one century earlier: Theodore Dreiser’s 1925 novel\, An American Tragedy. Based on the notorious murder of Grace Brown in the summer of 1906 at Big Moose Lake in the Adirondacks\, the novel should make for a more personal read. The book is around 800 pages\, so I am informing you now so you can play the early bird and get at that sweet\, sweet worm.\nIf all goes well\, this meeting will take place at The Other Side at 6:30pm on Tuesday\, August 12th.\n\nAs always\, a potluck dinner seems to make for a more comfortable experience\, so please feel free to bring something to share.

SUMMARY:The Theater at Woodshill Presents - Macbeth
DESCRIPTION:“Macbeth is an uncanny unity of setting\, plot\, and characters\, fused together beyond comparison with any other play of Shakespeare’s.”  \n-Harold Bloom \nOver four hundred years since its original staging\, The Tragedy of Macbeth remains one of the world’s most alluring and enduring pieces of dramatic theater—and\, as Shakespeare’s shortest tragic work\, it remains an unrivaled and unflinching exploration of ambition\, power\, and fate. Its timeless themes continue to resonate with modern audiences\, delving deep into the complexities of the human psyche and the dark consequences of unchecked desire. \nFor The Theater at Woodshill’s ninth season\, Macbeth is the “perfectest” choice\, a culmination of our previous excursions into Shakespeare’s tragic art\, including Hamlet (2019) and Romeo and Juliet (2023).  Its genre-defining moral conflict and utter poetic beauty poignantly aligns with our company’s dedication to classic\, thought-provoking theater. As a company that prides itself on fostering an intimate connection between audience and text\, performing in a thrust-style theater\, Woodshill provides an ideal environment for Macbeth’s haunting atmosphere. The blend of Shakespeare’s profound insights into the depths of human nature along Woodshill’s commitment to theatrical excellence promises a summer of gripping drama\, rooted in the eternal relevance of the Bard’s most haunting work. \nTickets: Here (Please note this event is not occurring at The Other Side) \nSupport: Here \nThanks\, as ever\, to our great\, good friends at THE OTHER SIDE.

SUMMARY:Big and Glassy Book Club
DESCRIPTION:The group has elected to read Henry Miller’s controversial\, 1934 fictive memoir\, Tropic of Cancer. Banned from publication in America upon its initial release due to its “candid sexuality”\, the book was the center of a major court ruling that set a precedent for the cause of free speech\, particularly in the realm of literature. The meeting will be held over a potluck dinner. The meeting is open to the public\, and reading the book or bringing a dish to pass is not required to attend.

SUMMARY:Hope\, Challenge\, and Beauty -- Gallery Opening
DESCRIPTION:Patrick Fiore – Paintings \nJune 6 to June 28\, 2025 \n“Determination\, hope\, challenge\, and beauty are the attributes and narratives expressed within my paintings. Inviting the viewer to reflect on our shared experiences\, we acknowledge those who suffer the trials of inequity. I reference historical and contemporary human rights issues in a world offering bounty for some and famine for others. My work is informed by the Social Realists\, specific at times\, denoting period\, place and culture\, while universal emotions are expressed through pose\, gesture and staging. \nHaving returned to my hometown in upstate New York\, I explore our history and its impact through the diversity of our cultures. We continue to weave a resilient community that has proven\, caring yields growth\, adding new fibers creates strength\, and preserving our long-treasured heritage ensures our longevity as valued traditions are passed down from our ancestral families to a new generation. \nOpening Reception: Friday\, June 6 from 5-7pm\nArtist Talk: Saturday\, June 28 at 1pm \nGallery Hours from 12-2pm:\nSaturday\, June 7\nThursday\, June 12\nSaturday\, June 14\nThursday\, June 19\nSaturday\, June 21\nThursday\, June 26\nSaturday\, June 28

SUMMARY:Killdeer Trio live at The Other Side!
DESCRIPTION:Killdeer Trio has been busy since their last performance at The Other Side! \nCollectively\, the group performed with Grammy-nominated violinist Sara Caswell. Individually bassist Evan Jagels is touring with pioneering math-rock band Dazzling Killmen\, and drummer Sebastian Green is touring with NYC indie-rock band YouBet. Guitarist Wyatt Ambrose released his new album Up There in February! \nThe members of the Trio have worked with acclaimed musicians of various styles including Stacy Dillard\, John Stowell\, Arlen Roth\, Eric Finland\, and Palehound. and the group opened for the legendary saxophonist Joel Frahm Trio feat. Dan Loomis and Ernesto Cervini at the Alias Winter Jazz Festival. \nThe name Killdeer Trio comes from the “Killdeer” bird\, commonly found in the upstate NY — the region each member was raised\, and now currently resides. Their music is deeply influenced by the rural environment in which it was conceived\, reflecting both its quiet serenity\, and constant invitation to explore the surrounding unknown. \nAs a band\, they aim to draw from their wide-reaching influences to create an experience that is accessible to audiences of all kinds\, and challenges expectations of style and genre. \nTheir upcoming series of spring concerts will be in preparation for recording their new album to be released this fall. Their self-titled album is available on bandcamp and all streaming platforms. \nTickets are $15.
