SUMMARY:Anncoustic - An Open Rehearsal
DESCRIPTION:Ann Carey has been vocalizing in Central New York bands for gas money ever since the late seventies\, morphing herself into the “music flavor of the month” in bands from Steppin’ Out\, Blue Steel\, Ted Radley and Co.\, Puttin’ on the Ritz\, to her latest adventure in the duo Nook n’ Crannie. \nThe doors are open for Ann’s open rehearsal at The Other Side. “I’d like to do a low-key prep for a future solo recording\, so I figured an open rehearsal on Sunday afternoons would be fun. I’m more productive when I have a gig in the books. It gives folks a space to pop into while they’re in town\, perhaps to frequent the Emerson Cafe or The Onion.” \nExpect to hear an eclectic mix of singer-songwriter tunes by Townes Vans Zant\, Joni Mitchell\, Bonnie Raitt\, and Nora Jones\, along with a few surprises\, in a bare bones style with her baritone ukulele.

SUMMARY:Exploring Historical Changes in Tree Cover Across Utica - Hamilton at The Other Side
DESCRIPTION:Exploring Historical Changes in Tree Cover Across Utica \nImplications for Urban Heat and Greenspacet\nwith Heather Kropp\, Assistant Professor for Environmental Studies \nUrban tree cover and greenspaces offer a wide array of social benefits and play a critical role in cooling the land surface during the summer. Changes in tree cover are largely shaped by historical urban planning decisions\, landowner preferences\, and biological processes. Combining historical aerial photography with artificial intelligence allows for a better understanding of how changes in tree cover and pavement shape the current urban landscape in Utica. I explore the implications of these changes for urban heat and access to greenspaces across Utica. \nPart of the Carl A. Rubino Hamilton at The Other Side Series \nFree to the public \nDonation Welcome

SUMMARY:Big and Glassy Book Club
DESCRIPTION:The Big and Glassy Book Club is back and ready for more. This time we will be reading the American masterpiece: Mark Twain’s The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. Originally published in 1885\, it is the novel\, Ernest Hemmingway claims\, from which “All modern American literature comes… There was nothing before. There has been nothing as good since.” I doubt I need to explain anymore\, as the book is practically imprinted on the collective American psyche.\n\nWe will be meeting to discuss it on Tuesday\, March 18th at 6:30pm at The Other Side of Utica (2011 Genesee St).\nDue to popular demand\, the potluck format of the meeting will be returning\, so if you would like to bring a dish to pass\, and are by no means obligated to do so\, please do; we will set up tables and have a grand ol’ time.\n\nAs always\, the meeting is open to the public\, whether you have read the book or not.\n\nFollowing Huck Finn\, we will be reading Percival Everett’s James\, a retelling of the classic tale from Jim’s perspective.\nMore information can be requested from Sherman at thesteins3@outlook.com.

SUMMARY:Herbal Study Group
DESCRIPTION:This month we will offer a discussion of real life experiences using\nherbal medicine to heal ailments. Please come and share your stories of\nsuccess\, failure or indeterminate outcome when using a plant based\nremedy. I have some experiences working with others\, friends\, family and\nmyself. I hope this is an opportunity for us to see what has worked in\nthe real world\, not just in the pages of some book or website\, and in\nthis way give us the confidence to attempt to heal ourselves and those\naround us. Or perhaps to get some ideas of why what we used did not\nwork. \n$5 suggested donation.

SUMMARY:Ruth Dandrea -- "Casting" Book Release and Reading
DESCRIPTION:Throughout Casting Ruth Ann Dandrea expresses thanks and angst; gratitude for life’s gifts of grandchildren\, the bits and bounty of the natural world; distress over wars and waste\, violence and greed. \nThis collection is one of self discovery through love\, loss and lessons learned. The images in Casting allow us a glimpse into the rhythms of Dandrea’s life\, and just possibly encourage us to reexamine our own perspectives. Dandrea is exceptional\, and Casting a thoroughly enjoyable read. \n~Kathy DeLong\, co-author Wow: Women on Water \nJoin us to celebrate the release of Ruth’s new book! She will be on hand to read selections from her book and more. Copies will be available thanks to Doubly Mad Books.

SUMMARY:Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? (click for all upcoming dates)
DESCRIPTION:THIS EVENT WILL BE HAPPENING AT UNITY HALL CHECK OUT THEIR WEBSITE FOR TICKETS AND MORE https://www.unityhall.com/events \n“We are thrilled and deeply grateful to return to Unity Hall to present this landmark of the American stage\,” says Woodshill’s Artistic Director\, Allen Guy Wilcox. “Showcasing the work of 20th Century American playwrights in partnership with Unity Hall provides a wonderful counterpoint to our work during the summer\, which centers on Shakespeare. Albee’s Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf is an absolutely electrifying and iconic work that has stunned American stages since it debuted in the early 1960s. We are so glad to help welcome in a new spirit of theater-going culture in our area\, especially for this kind of gripping\, and thought-provoking work.” \nWho’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf opened on Broadway in 1962 with a production that received rave reviews for its raw power and provocative content winning the Tony Award for Best Play. The play’s controversial exploration of a volatile co-dependent marriage and the effects that can come with psychological and emotional warfare sparked a new era in the American theater vernacular. The production ran for nearly two years and was adapted for the screen in 1966 in Mike Nichols’ directorial film debut starring Elizabeth Taylor\, Richard Burton\, Sandy Dennis and George Segal. The film received 13 Academy Award nominations and won five. \n7:30PM \nWEDNESDAY\, FEBRUARY 5\nTHURSDAY\, FEBRUARY 6\nFRIDAY\, FEBRUARY 7\nSATURDAY\, FEBRUARY 8

SUMMARY:The Big Conversation
DESCRIPTION:On July 22\, 2002\, “two old hippies\,” possessing a dream and not much more than a dime\, started a coffeeshop business in Uptown Utica. \nIt was to offer a feast for tongue\, eyes\, ears and imaginations\, an inclusive\, urban place where strangers could become friends face-to-face\, a space for the artist and the dreamer in everyone. They created a community and left a legend. \nCome and hear them talk about the origins of the Cafe\, its major influences\, the passion that inspired two teachers to start a business at mid-life!

SUMMARY:Herbal Study Group
DESCRIPTION:This month’s discussion will focus on the plant Fishwort. The smell of\nthe torn fresh leaf is reminiscent of cilantro and fish. The plant is\nalso known by the Latin name Houttuynia. In Japanese the plant’s name\ntranslates to “brings poison under control.” Many use the plant to\nremedy the symptoms of what are said to be Lyme co-infections. The\nplant also has an effect on the blood\, skin\, and urinary tract. \n$5 suggested donation.

SUMMARY:Tom Townsley's Blues at The Other Side - A Tribute to Chess Records
DESCRIPTION:Chess Records in Chicago was one of the most important labels in American music. \nIt introduced the world to the first electric band in Muddy Waters’ ensemble. It gave us some of the greatest blues vocalists (Muddy Waters\, Howlin’ Wolf\, Etta James\, Koko Taylor\, et.al)\, the greatest blues harmonica players (Little Walter\, Sonny Boy Williamson)\, some of the greatest guitarists (Buddy Guy\, Hubert Sumlin\, Elmore James)\, and as if that wasn’t enough\, Chess Records gave us prototype rock n roll with Chuck Berry and Bo Diddley. \nJoin us when Tom Townsley and his intrepid House Band featuring Morris Tarbell\, Sean Peters\, Jake Lozo\, and Lenny Milano celebrate the legacy of this great American label with special guests Dave Liddy\, George Deveny\, and Jes Sheldon. It will be a one of a kind blues extravaganza! \nShow is at 7:30pm – tickets are $20 at the door\, seating is limited so arrive early!
