SUMMARY:Price Per Barrel: The Human Cost of Extraction -- Book Event
DESCRIPTION:Author Event with Robin Behl\, Physician Assistant\nReading and book signing session \nBooks available for purchase with cash\, credit card\, or Venmo.\nPaperback $20. Hardcover $25. \nThe event is free with donations encouraged to support The Other Side. \n  \nAbout the book “Price Per Barrel” \nThere are human stories that come out of the repeated cycle of boom and bust that has shaped our movement across the North American continent for the last four hundred years.  Whether it’s the gold for our banks\, the copper for our cell phones\, the oil that powers our lives\, our quest for the Moon\, or our human need for entertainment\, we come together to dig for it\, drill for it\, and race for it. \nIn each community impacted by the extractive industries\, there are men and women in blue shirts & steel-toed boots\, in white coats & stethoscopes\, in booney hats & badges\, who sacrifice themselves to care for their neighbors. Price Per Barrel: The Human Cost of Extraction looks at what a sudden population boom can do to a town and the people who care for it. \nThis book is broad in theme\, reflecting the breadth of work that first responders and healthcare workers do for their communities.  It touches on controversial topics like fracking\, mining\, and radioactive waste. It visits the drivers of the Indy 500 and the astronauts of the new space race. It covers housing crises and social protests. And it explores sexual harassment in the pre-&-post  #MeToo era. \nWhat emerges is evidence that first responders\, once called to duty\, refuse to abandon their posts\, even when their towns change around them.  They rise far and above their job descriptions\, putting aside their own PTSD until the boom is over.  But the trauma they endure at the hands of the newcomers and outsiders is real\, persistent\, and contagious.  For that reason\, it is incumbent upon us to examine our own lives; how much we use\, how much we waste\, and how we vote. \nPrice Per Barrel is part travelogue\, part mental health journey. Robin spent years on the road\, including six months living in her truck\, talking to the people on the front lines and having new adventures of her own. By telling their story\, perhaps we can more fully understand the price of extracting each barrel of oil or each shovel of ore and be better equipped when the next boom train stops in our town. \n  \nAuthor Bio \nRobin grew up in southeastern New Mexico\, where she got her first taste of emergency response as a volunteer firefighter\, just after she graduated from High School. That early passion for helping people was solidified during her undergraduate tenure at New Mexico State University\, where she continued her service and training as a firefighter and EMT.  She would go on to spend thirteen years in emergency services with a variety of agencies around the country\, becoming a paramedic and a dispatcher.  She earned a master’s degree in medicine at the University of New England\, in Maine and worked as a Physician Assistant in cardiovascular medicine for seven years\, including in Utica. \n  \nIn that time\, she had the opportunity to train and work in the Arctic\, both in Alaska and in Greenland.   Her love for remote northern climates\, and her insatiable wanderlust\, inspired “Price Per Barrel: The Human Cost of Extraction\,” her first non-fiction book.  Robin was previously published in academic journals related to her medical practice including\, “The Hidden Field of View:  Challenges in Sustaining a Robotic Open-Heart Program” for the Indian Journal of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery and “Robotic surgery: Would Any Other (more accurate) Name Smell as Sweet?” for the Journal of Robotic Surgery. \n  \nIn her travels\, Robin has visited every state in the union\, every province in Canada and more than three dozen countries.  She has left the practice of medicine and now works in documentary filmmaking\, which allows her to tell stories in a whole new way.  She is a dancer and a choreographer who feels most at home when she’s on a stage. \n  \nShe is currently working on her next book\, “Insensible Loss:  Why Doctors Quit.”  It’s a critical look at medicine in the United States and what drives providers like her out of the field and into work they find more rewarding. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Rebuilding a Cinema Culture in Cambodia
DESCRIPTION:Hamilton at The Other Side presents: \nRebuilding a Cinema Culture in Cambodia: \nfrom Golden Age to Decimation to Emerging Art-House Cinema \na talk by Martine Guyot-Bender \nprofessor of French and Francophone Studies \nCambodia’s cinematic history is a tale of extremes\, oscillating between the heights of a post independent ‘Golden Age’ and the destruction led by the Khmer Rouge regime. \nToday\, a prudent social cinema is slower reclaiming its place in Cambodian cultural identity. Not an easy task in an environment where “freedom of expression is still fragile” Professor Guyot-Bender’s work was funded by the Center for Khmer Studies. \nFree and open to the public

SUMMARY:The Invention of the Bible
DESCRIPTION:Hamilton at The Other Side \nwith Professor of Classics and Religion Ian Mills \n“The Bible is an anthology of books. Each book — written centuries apart by diverse persons in various languages – has its own origin story. But the bible too had to be invented. \nWherefrom the idea of a closed corpus of uniquely authoritative texts? Professor Mills tells a story of evolving information technologies\, heresy\, apocrypha\, and the invention of the Bible by Jews and Christians in the second century CE.” \nFree and open to the public!

SUMMARY:aRT -- Jazz at The Other Side
DESCRIPTION:“…an innate spirituality…” – All About Jazz \nScott Robinson – saxophone/winds \nJulian Thayer – bass \nPheeron akLaff – drums \n  \nTickets are $25/$10 for sutdents \nto reserve tickets call: 315-735-4825 or email kodomenico@verizon.net \n  \nAbout aRT \nThe trio known as aRT – akLaff\, Robinson\, Thayer –  is a highly adventurous group of creative minds that has been performing new and startling music since 1988. aRT has appeared at jazz festivals\, art galleries\, and scientific conferences here and abroad\, and has produced collaborative projects with sculptor Rob Fisher and choreographer LaRue Allen. aRT’s 1991 “Flying Carpet” multimedia performance at the Knitting Factory premiered a new\, improvisational method of interactively intermixing art/performance video streams. This idea was expanded upon in 1996 for the Studio for Creative Inquiry in Pittsburgh\, where their planetarium performance “Night of the Living Cell” combined imagery of cell life with real-time video feed of the performers – in 3D! “The result\,” The Wall Street Journal reported at the time\, “could become a new form of artistic experience.” In 1997\, aRT was selected to be the closing act for the Sun Ra Festival in New York. In 2020\, aRT performed in Philadelphia for the Institute of Contemporary Art’s exhibition on Milford Graves\, with whom aRT had been working toward a collaborative music/science project. As Mr. Graves was not well enough to perform\, he graciously provided a set of his TonoRhythmology/Sonification recordings – which he created by translating his own physiological data into musical sound — along with his blessing to incorporate them into the performance. This provided a means by which he could\, in a way\, be present and part of the music… an idea that aRT hopes to expand on in future performances. Most recently\, aRT mounted a major multimedia concert event at Roulette\, “Higher Powers\,” in honor of painter Richard M. Powers’ 2021 centennial. \naRT:\nPheeroan akLaff is one of the most important drummer/percussionists in creative music. Since a very young age he has been a major contributor to the artform\, working alongside giants such as Anthony Braxton\, Cecil Taylor\, Andrew Hill\, Oliver Lake\, Sam Rivers\, Henry Threadgill and many more. Pheeroan’s music is steeped in powerful ritual and imagination\, and through his organization Seed Artists he is finding new ways to present this music to the public.\nScott Robinson is an award-winning composer and multi-instrumentalist who has presented his music in nearly every corner of the globe\, appearing on more than 275 recordings. He has worked with Joe Lovano\, Ron Carter\, Maria Schneider\, Chet Baker\, Henry Grimes\, Ella Fitzgerald\, Anthony Braxton and many more. Scott’s ScienSonic Laboratories imprint has released more than a dozen adventurous and far-reaching albums\, including Flow States with Milford Graves\, Roscoe Mitchell and Marshall Allen. His quartet album Tenormore was named “Best New Release” in a 2019 JazzTimes poll.\nDr. Julian Thayer is currently Distinguished Professor of Psychological Science at UC Irvine. A Fulbright Fellow and winner of the Distinguished Scientist Award\, he has produced more than 650 publications\, and is ranked among the top .1% of most-cited researchers worldwide. His research on music and psycho-acoustics has been featured in the Wall Street Journal and Psychology Today. An accomplished bassist\, Jules has recorded with Geri Allen\, Charlie Mariano\, George Garzone and others. \n
