SUMMARY:The Oneida Community: Free Lovers or Public Menace?
DESCRIPTION:The Carl A. Rubino Hamilton at The Other Side Series presents: \nThe Oneida Community: Free Lovers or Public Menace? \nwith Christian Goodwillie – Director and Curator of Special Collections and Archives \nFrom 1848-1880\, the Oneida Community (OC)\, 20 miles west of Utica\, practiced a unique system of complex marriage\,\nthat eventually included a planned breeding process. Their practices drew outrage from a Hamilton College professor\, who\nbegan a campaign to shut OC down. The OC’s public image was further tarnished by the assassination of president James\nGarfield in 1881 by former OC member Charles Guiteau\, events depicted in the 2025 Netflix series Death by Lightning. Goodwillie will talk about the origins\, history\, social and sexual practices of this famous experiment and make some corrections to the Netflix depiction! \nFree and Open to the Public — Donations Welcome

SUMMARY:Medicine Hunters - Hamilton at The Other Side
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Francisco Hernandez was the physician sent by Spain in 1570 to lead the first explicitly scientific expedition. Following his trail in Mexico this summer\, Prof. Cooley uncovered how Indigenous knowledge and European ambition collided in the search for cures. In a preview of her upcoming book\, she will tell us this story of drug discovery as a tale of wonder\, extraction\, and possibility. This lecture invites you to see the early Americas as a living laboratory where the dream of universal remedies was born. \nwith Mackenzie Cooley – Associate Professor of History Director of Medieval and Renaissance Studies at Hamilton College \nFree and Open to the Public — Donations Welcome!

SUMMARY:Platform Plebs: Sharing Power
DESCRIPTION:Carl A. Rubino Hamilton at The Other Side series\n\nPlatform Plebs: Sharing Power\, a talk by Ashley Gorham\, Assistant Professor of Government\n\nTraditionally\, online platforms\, especially social media\, have not been seen as political spaces. Yet as contemporary events attest\, many social media platforms are distinctly political\, featuring content and making policies of broad\, public\, and common concern. Given this reality\, we should investigate how such spaces are governed and how they should be governed in the future. Drawing on Machiavellian political thought\, Prof. Gorham offers a model for a more democratic form of platform governance.\n\nFree and Open to the Public\n\nWednesday\, October 15\, 2025\n7:30 p.m.

SUMMARY:More Than You Can Know - Hamilton at The Other Side
DESCRIPTION:While cleaning out the attic of her family home\, Canadian-American writer Naomi\nGuttman discovers bundles of love letters written during her parents’ transatlantic\ncourtship. With those letters\, plus home-movie footage\, photographs\, and surprisingly\ncandid interviews about love\, fidelity\, and gender roles\, Guttman weaves a poignant tale\nof a sixty-four-year marriage between two doctors whose love is tested by time and\ncircumstance. Inspired by the films of Alan Berliner\, Judith Helfand\, and Sarah Polley\,\nGuttman’s first film reveals a rare and intimate glimpse into the arc of a complex\nrelationship \n  \nPart of the Carl. SUMMARY:Exploring Historical Changes in Tree Cover Across Utica - Hamilton at The Other Side
DESCRIPTION:Exploring Historical Changes in Tree Cover Across Utica \nImplications for Urban Heat and Greenspacet\nwith Heather Kropp\, Assistant Professor for Environmental Studies \nUrban tree cover and greenspaces offer a wide array of social benefits and play a critical role in cooling the land surface during the summer. Changes in tree cover are largely shaped by historical urban planning decisions\, landowner preferences\, and biological processes. Combining historical aerial photography with artificial intelligence allows for a better understanding of how changes in tree cover and pavement shape the current urban landscape in Utica. I explore the implications of these changes for urban heat and access to greenspaces across Utica. \nPart of the Carl A. SUMMARY:Reds: The Tragedy of American Communism - Hamilton at The Other Side
DESCRIPTION:by Maurice Isserman\, Publius Virgilius Rogers Professor of American History at Hamilton College \nAfter generations in the shadows\, socialism is making headlines in the United States\, following the Bernie Sanders presidential campaigns and the election of several democratic socialists to Congress. Today’s leftists hail from a long lineage of anti-capitalist activists in the United States\, yet the true legacy and lessons of their most radical and controversial forebears\, the American Communists\, remain little understood.

SUMMARY:The Invention of the Bible
DESCRIPTION:Hamilton at The Other Side \nwith Professor of Classics and Religion Ian Mills \n“The Bible is an anthology of books. Each book — written centuries apart by diverse persons in various languages – has its own origin story. But the bible too had to be invented. \nWherefrom the idea of a closed corpus of uniquely authoritative texts? Professor Mills tells a story of evolving information technologies\, heresy\, apocrypha\, and the invention of the Bible by Jews and Christians in the second century CE.” \nFree and open to the public!

DESCRIPTION:Hamilton at The Other Side presents: \nRebuilding a Cinema Culture in Cambodia: \nfrom Golden Age to Decimation to Emerging Art-House Cinema \na talk by Martine Guyot-Bender \nprofessor of French and Francophone Studies \nCambodia’s cinematic history is a tale of extremes\, oscillating between the heights of a post independent ‘Golden Age’ and the destruction led by the Khmer Rouge regime. \nToday\, a prudent social cinema is slower reclaiming its place in Cambodian cultural identity. Not an easy task in an environment where “freedom of expression is still fragile” Professor Guyot-Bender’s work was funded by the Center for Khmer Studies. \nFree and open to the public
