Utica Herbal Study Group: Italian Folk Medicine with Lisa Fazio
February 5 @ 6:30 pm - 8:30 pm
Join us to learn about the folk medicine practices of Southern Italy. These
practices come from ancient roots and emerged in the Southern Italian
paesani (peasants) as a way to empower, protect, and care for their
families and villages, and were brought to America by the Italian
immigrants. We will discuss history, healing methods, and plants used in
various ways including the practices of Benedicaria, “the blessing way”,
that include herbs for protection, dream incubation, and the curing of
illness. We will talk and share about many Italian Folk Medicine plants
that can be gathered and grown locally in the Mohawk Valley.
Lisa Fazio is a second generation Italian American. Both of her paternal
grandparents were born in Sud Italia; her Nonna (grandmother) from the
city of Benevento, la citta delle strega (the city of witches) where there
continues to be a strong practice of Italian folk healing and indigenous
witchcraft. Her Nonno (grandfather) is from the village of Feroleto Antico
