Alternative Electronic Music #15: featuring Sooner
November 9 @ 7:30 pm - 9:30 pm
Sooner perform compositions and improvisations that move between intricate duo playing and ambient soundscapes. Both members contribute original material they collectively translate in to a group sound that is larger than the sum of its parts. Bristling textures exist alongside stretched out vocal loops, and unison saxophone and guitar melodies appear as if from nowhere.
Charlotte Greve – alto sax / voice / electronics
Simon Jermyn – guitar / electronics
Charlotte Greve is an alto saxophonist / composer and vocalist living in NYC. Active as both a leader and a sidewoman, Greve has carved out a unique niche on both the NYC and German jazz / improvised music scenes.
She has written for 60 piece choir, received an Echo award , appeared on a multitude of recordings in a variety of contexts, and worked with a who’s who of the contemporary scene.
A guitarist, electric bassist and composer, Simon Jermyn is an NYC based musician originally from Ireland. Simon is busy on the NYC music scene with a variety of projects and bands including Jim Black’s Smash and Grab, Wood River, The Marc Hannaford Trio as well as his own groups. He holds a PhD from University of Ulster in Northern Ireland and has performed throughout the US and Europe.
Sooner’s soon to be released debut EP is the result of long term collaboration between Charlotte Greve and Simon Jermyn. For their debut recording they decided to enlist the contributions of sound artist / composer and electronics wizard, Joe Branciforte, who acted like a third member of the group, through his extensive processing of the recorded material.
The EP is made up of short compositions by both Greve and Jermyn, enveloped in ambient improvisations.
This show will begin with an opening set from local electronic music legend PHUNgEYE.
